Walk first, coffee after. On the Bayside that means one of two strips: Manly Harbour Village, or the Wynnum esplanade. Both have a flat path along the water for the walk and a row of cafés with outside tables for the coffee.

Here's how I do each, and the cafés where a pup on the lead is welcome at the table.

Manly: the harbour loop, then the village

Park at the harbour, walk south along the water towards Lota as far as you like, and turn around. Back at Manly Harbour Village the cafés are right there, with outside tables looking at the boats.

I'm not going to name names, because cafés change their minds about pups more often than you'd think. Look for the outside tables along the village, ask at the counter, and you'll find two or three that are happy to have a little one at your feet.

Good for: a weekend morning, a pup who's happy to lie under a table and watch the world.

Wynnum: the esplanade, then the strip

Start at the wading pool end and walk the esplanade south past the jetty. Turn around wherever suits, and the cafés along the front are your reward.

Same rule as Manly: outside tables, ask first. The front has a row of them, and most are fine with a pup on a short lead under the table.

Good for: a weekday morning, a slow old pup, a coffee with the sea breeze.

The unwritten rules

A pup at a café is a guest. Short lead, under the table or beside your chair, and a lie-down rather than a wander. If the café's busy, an outside table on the edge is kinder to everyone.

And ask before you assume: a café that was happy with pups last year can change its mind. I check my list every so often for exactly that reason.
