Where's a good walk with my little dog in Wynnum?

Wynnum is the easy answer on the Bayside: a flat path along the water that goes as far as you want, a shady boardwalk for the hot months, and a fenced council yard with its own small-dog side.

I pick up from Wynnum on my weekday round, and it's where the pack and I go when we want the sea breeze. Here are the three I'd send you to.

The esplanade: wading pool to Pandanus Beach

Park near the Wynnum Wading Pool and walk south. The sealed path runs along the water past the jetty to Pandanus Beach, and if you keep going it takes you all the way to Manly and Lota. Wynnum to Lota is about eight kilometres one way, so most of us pick a slice.

For a little one, the wading pool to Pandanus Beach stretch is the sweet spot. Flat, wide, water on one side and grass on the other.

It's a shared path, so bikes and prams come through. A short lead and the left-hand side keeps everyone happy.

Good for: a morning walk with a coffee at the end, a pup who likes to watch the world go past.

The mangrove boardwalk for hot days

At the northern end of Wynnum, a boardwalk runs out through the mangroves along the creek. It's shaded for most of the way, which is what you want here from October on, and the little ones love the smell of the mud at low tide.

Good for: summer, a half-hour wander, a sniffer.

Where can they run? Elanora Park

Brisbane City Council lists one off-leash area in Wynnum: Elanora Park. It's fully fenced, it has lights, and it has a separate small-dog enclosure. That last bit is rare on the Bayside, and it's the reason I'd pick it for a cavoodle or a shih tzu over any of the mixed yards.

The lights mean it works in summer after the heat goes out of the day.

I checked that on the council's own list this week. Rules change, so if you're reading this in a year, look it up again before you unclip.

Good for: a proper run for a small pup, an early evening in summer when the lights come on.
