Where's a good walk with my little dog in Wakerley?

Wakerley has three fenced council yards, and one of them has its own small-dog side. Here's which is which, and where I go when the pack wants a proper walk.

Wakerley's an easy suburb to walk a little one in: flat, quiet streets and three fenced council yards, which is more than any other suburb on my round. One of the three has its own small-dog side.

I pick up from Wakerley most weekday mornings, so I know the streets from the van. Here's where I'd send you, and where I go when the pack wants more than a lap of the block.

Sheriff Park: the one with the small-dog yard

Start here. Brisbane City Council lists Sheriff Park, on Habitat Drive, as a fully fenced off-leash area with a separate small-dog enclosure. Only a handful of parks on the Bayside have one, and this is Wakerley's.

That separate yard is the whole reason I'd pick it for a cavoodle or a dachshund. Your little one gets a run without a labrador using them as a speed bump.

No lights, so it's a daytime park.

Good for: a proper run, a pup who's just learning the joy of a fenced yard, an after-school visit.

The other two fenced yards

Council lists two more in Wakerley, both fully fenced, neither with a small-dog side:

Moss Road (No 42) Park, off Watervale Parade.
Phillips Place Park, off Campbell Street.

Both are fine for a little one when they're quiet. If a bigger pack is in there having a good time, I'd wait, or head back to Sheriff Park.

All three are on the council's own off-leash list, which I checked this week. Rules change, so if you're reading this in a year, look it up again before you unclip.

Wakerley's streets are the walk in between: wide footpaths, not much traffic, and enough grass verges to keep a sniffer busy.

Good for: a weekday evening, a pup who likes to sniff more than stride.

When the pack wants a proper walk

For a real walk, I drive five minutes. The Lota Creek Boardwalk starts at the end of Whites Road in Lota: a wide timber boardwalk out over the mangroves and a flat loop back, about two kilometres, shady most of the way. I wrote up the Lota walks separately, and that boardwalk is the one I'd send a Wakerley family to first.
