Where's a good walk with my little dog in Birkdale?

Birkdale is on the Redland side of the line, so the rules are Redland City Council's. Three Paddocks Park has a fenced small-dog side, and the foreshore path at Aquatic Paradise is the walk.

Birkdale is the last stop on my weekday round, and it's a different council to the rest of it. Lota, Manly and Wynnum are Brisbane City; Birkdale is Redland City, so the rules and the parks are Redland's.

The good news: Redland lists three off-leash areas in Birkdale, and one of them, Three Paddocks Park, has its own fenced side for the little ones. Here's where I'd send you.

Three Paddocks Park: the one with the small-dog side

Start here. Redland City Council lists Three Paddocks Park, on Thomas Street, as fully fenced with an airlock gate and separate small and large areas. That separate side is the reason I'd pick it for a cavoodle or a shih tzu over any mixed yard.

The airlock gate is a nice touch. You get through the first gate, unclip, and only then open the second one, so nobody bolts while you're fumbling with the lead.

Good for: a proper run for a small pup, a pup who's new to fenced yards.

The foreshore at Aquatic Paradise

For a walk rather than a run, head to the water. The path along the Birkdale foreshore runs past Aquatic Paradise and on towards Wellington Point, flat and with the bay on one side.

Redland also lists Aquatic Paradise Park West, on Commodore Drive, as an off-leash area. It's only partially fenced and has no small-dog side, so I'd treat it as a walk, not a run, with a little one. Keep the lead on unless you know your pup will stay close.

Good for: a longer walk, a morning with the sea breeze, a pup who likes to watch the boats.

Lachlan Street Park

The third one on Redland's list. Fully fenced with an airlock gate, no small-dog side. Fine when it's quiet; if a bigger group is in there, I'd head back to Three Paddocks.

All three are on the council's own list, which I checked this week. Rules change, so if you're reading this in a year, look it up again before you unclip.
